 Red Nightfall Dance Theatre presents Maiden Mother Crone, an interdisciplinary performance exploring the experiences through which we find our wisdom, strength, and joy.

An immersive, fashion-focused art installation welcomes you into the evening before the performance begins. Onstage, dance meets an eight-piece chamber orchestra, fashion design, and projections with live animation to tell the story of the Crone and the life that shapes her.

Four performances: Thursday and Friday evenings, with two performances on Saturday evening.

The story

In the CRONE universe, she is an ancient, enduring presence, both a goddess-like figure and a woman whose experiences we might recognize in our own lives.

Maiden Mother Crone follows her through the trials and discoveries that bring her into her full power. We explore what she has created, loved, celebrated, and lost, and how she comes to recognize the beauty of her path.

The Crone is often portrayed as someone to fear. We are drawn to her complexity: her discernment, potency, and capacity for bold action, alongside her imperfections and her possibilities for joy. Though the story begins with an archetypal feminine figure, its questions reach across genders: how do we turn life’s challenges into wisdom, strength, and freedom?

Music made in collaboration

The evening’s live music includes newly commissioned pieces by composer Joe Jaxson, who has been working in the studio with our dancers as the production develops. His bold, cinematic writing brings another voice to the storytelling.

Joe’s musical gestures will draw on the sigils developed in collaboration with Robby Durand of EmmaSis Designs: visual symbols that form part of the language of the CRONE universe. Through this collaboration, that language finds expression in sound as well as movement and design.

A world taking shape

Following Rituals of Light, Fractured Dawn, and Unbecoming, Red Nightfall turns its attention to the figure who gave the CRONE universe its name.

Each production has brought new artists into conversation and opened new possibilities for how we tell stories. Maiden Mother Crone continues that shared exploration, bringing audiences into a world built through the growing relationships among our dancers, musicians, designers, and collaborators.
